My book club reading list for the month of March includes a non-fiction, two graphic novels, Get Weird Lit, a fictional "time-bending gem", and Atomic Habits by James Clear for work. Altogether, approximately 1,858 pages to read. Sounds fun, right! You bet. Especially since each of these books is tied to a variety of virtual book clubs hosted by libraries across the country and one hosted by a coffee shop in Toronto, Canada. I love the concept of sharing thoughts and comments with other readers joining from different parts of the world. One of my book clubs, hosted by the Austin Library, includes a regular reader from Romania. She is truly a delight. In fact, she had shared that the eerie castle featured in the recently released 2024 film Nosferatu happens to be the castle in her small town. Nice!
It's easy to join these virtual book clubs. You can find them from the Eventbrite website or APP, which I have on my phone. I started with my first virtual book club hosted by the Arlington Virginia library. This lovely group of women who regularly join is full of warmth, kindness, and good humor. I adore seeing them, virtually on Zoom, every second Tuesday of the month.
Quickly thereafter, my addiction to virtual book clubs grew, and I joined the Get Weird Book Club hosted on the fourth Wednesday of the month by the Austin Texas library. I also signed up for their Graphic Novel Book Club which meets every second Monday.
Shortly thereafter, I hitched myself to a group in Toronto that meets every first Monday of the month.
My newest addiction is another reading group from Penn Hill library that focuses on literary books turned into graphic novels. This month, we're reading Octavia Butler's Parable of the Sower. It's my first meeting with them on Wednesday the 12th.
Here's a list of my book club reads for this month:
The Husbands by Holly Gramazio (a "time-bending gem").
Wise Gals by Nathalia Holt (nonfiction story about "the spies who built the CIA and changed the future of espionage).
Rouge by Mona Awad (Get Weird lit)
Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler (graphic-novel version)
Birds of Prey (DC Comics Graphic Novel) written by Kelly Thompson
Atomic Habits by James Clear (nonfiction self-help)
In addition to making wonderful friends at Book Club, reading is my gateway to improving my writing. Today, I hit 1,000 words. All this reading and all this writing while still working a full-time job. Yeah, the paycheck helps fund my book addiction. But keep in mind, book club selections are also available through the Libby App.
Read on, my friends. Each story, each book, is a wonderful adventure. A journey I'll enjoy my entire life. To "book heaven" and beyond!
